I certainly don’t think submission requires becoming a person without an ego, needs, or any desire to hear that they’ve done something well. Praise can be deeply meaningful within D/s, and I genuinely enjoy recognizing good service. The important word here is genuinely. If I praise someone, I mean it. I have very little interest in offering approval or reassurance I don’t actually feel simply because someone needs to hear it. There is something about manufactured or demanded praise that has always deeply repelled me.

There is something very compelling to me about a submissive whose satisfaction in service can sometimes be complete without needing to turn back toward them. They did something because it pleased me. They made my life easier. They anticipated something correctly, contributed to my comfort or pleasure, or simply did something exactly the way I wanted it done. There is a particular kind of devotion in allowing the reward to sometimes be contained within that knowledge.

There is a subtle difference between I love knowing that I pleased you and I need you to tell me how good I was for pleasing you. Those experiences can look almost identical from the outside, but over time they can feel very different to the Dominant receiving the service. The same is true of recognition from other people. There is nothing wrong with taking pride in being known as devoted, capable, or attentive, but when being witnessed becomes too important, service slowly shifts from devotion into performance for reward. The attention begins to drift away from the person being served and toward the person doing the serving. Is that not missing the point?

I don’t think this is particularly unusual, nor is it exclusive to submission. We live in a culture that encourages us to look outward for evidence of our worth. We want people to notice that we are generous, accomplished, desirable, talented, devoted. It can be remarkably easy for the recognition we receive for something to become tangled up with why we do it in the first place.

Perhaps that is why I find quiet service so revealing. What happens when nobody else sees the effort? When there is no audience to recognize your devotion, and I don’t immediately reward you for doing exactly what was expected? Can the satisfaction sometimes simply be knowing that you served me well?

To me, that is a particularly beautiful form of submission. Not because a submissive should be invisible or endlessly giving, and certainly not because appreciation is unnecessary. I want the people who serve me to feel proud of themselves, and I want them to know when they have delighted me. Authentic praise matters to me precisely because it is freely given and genuinely felt. I find something profoundly satisfying about a submissive who can sometimes walk away from an act of service without applause, attention, or reassurance, secure in the knowledge that they pleased me.

Every so often, someone reaches out to plan a session, only to discover that I’m a professional Dominant. They tell me they’re no longer interested because they’re looking for something “authentic.” It always leaves me wondering the same thing.

I can’t help but wonder if we’ve mistaken unpaid for authentic. There’s something about a financial exchange that makes people instinctively suspicious, as though payment somehow diminishes sincerity. I’ve never really understood that.

All relationships involve exchange. Sometimes it’s money. More often it’s time, emotional labour, companionship, mentorship, domestic support, care, or simply showing up for one another again and again. Healthy relationships rarely exist without some form of reciprocity. The currencies may be different, but exchange itself is not unique to professional relationships.

The financial exchange doesn’t replace authenticity. It creates a different kind of container. It allows me to dedicate my full attention to creating an experience with intention and care. It allows me to think deeply about psychology, communication, pacing, ritual, and all of the small details that shape what unfolds between two people. I don’t see the exchange as something that detracts from authenticity. If anything, it’s part of what allows me to create the conditions where authenticity has room to emerge.

I’ve led hundreds of scenes where this has happened. I’ve watched fantasy become a vehicle for honesty. I’ve watched carefully negotiated scenes become unexpectedly vulnerable. I’ve watched people discover parts of themselves they didn’t know were there. None of those moments felt less authentic because money had changed hands. If anything, the structure we intentionally created often made them possible.

People sometimes imagine that authenticity and intention exist at opposite ends of a spectrum, as though something carefully crafted must somehow be less real. I don’t think that’s true. We don’t assume a conversation with a therapist is somehow less meaningful because money changed hands. We don’t question the authenticity of a ceremony because it was rehearsed. We don’t dismiss a meaningful conversation because someone intentionally created the conditions for it to happen. Ritual, preparation, and care don’t diminish authenticity. They often create the conditions for it.

Fantasy works much the same way. The leather, the protocol, the titles, the ritual, and the roles we step into are not the opposite of authenticity. They’re a language. Sometimes they allow people to express parts of themselves that ordinary conversation never could.

To me, authenticity has never been about whether something is natural or constructed. It’s about whether something real is actually happening between the people in it.

<a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank" Strong communities grow from the understanding that every person brings something distinct to the table. Every life path is different, every voice is unique, and every person’s gifts show up in their own way.

Someone else’s success does not take anything away from you. It does not shrink what is possible for your life. If anything, it reminds us that possibility exists.

At the same time, no one should be expected to dull themselves in order to make others feel comfortable. People should not have to shrink their accomplishments, soften their confidence, or hide their joy. Call me a hedonist, but with the unique struggles of this time I suggest we all fully lean into any form of (harmless) joy available to us!

I really believe there is no real competition between human beings. Each of us is entirely shaped by our experiences, perspectives, creativity, and presence. What one person offers will never be identical to what another brings.

Communities flourish when people actively uplift one another. Encouragement spreads. Support multiplies. length="0" type="image/jpeg"/>

I think many people benefit from external structure, accountability, ritual and care. D/s dynamics can absolutely support growth in this way. Being witnessed by another person can be deeply motivating and healing. Humans are relational creatures after all.

Still, I don’t think this can be the only driving force.

I once had a submissive who wanted to quit smoking for me. The care and devotion were real, but ultimately no dynamic could fully do that inner work for him. I say that without judgment. I think many of us have experienced some version of trying to become better for someone else first.

External motivation is not weakness. Seeking support is not weakness. Interdependence is healthy. Yet sustainable care needs us to build a relationship with ourselves too. To believe we matter outside of what we provide, perform, achieve, or are to other people.

I say this from an anti-perfectionist perspective. I’ve never been a 5am gym person. I’m creative, emotional, indulgent, a night owl, honestly a bit of a hedonist. Still, I take good care of myself and continue returning to the work when I fall out of alignment.

To me, a grounded and disciplined person isn’t someone who never struggles. It’s someone who keeps returning to themselves. Someone who keeps reconnecting to their values, goals, desires and care for self, again and again, without shame, punishment, or thriving for total self reliance.

No dynamic can replace the lifelong work of learning how to care for yourself consistently. Submission does not magically create self control, and Dominance cannot indefinitely regulate another person into becoming the very best version of themselves.

So what do you want out of life? What are you doing to help create that, not just for others, but for yourself?
